14-year-old rights campaigner shot in Pakistan

A 14-year-old campaigner for girls' education has been injured in a gun attack in Pakistan's restive North West.

Malala Yousafzai, who was international attention for her efforts to bring peace back to her hometown of Swat, was attacked while on her way home from school in Mingora, the main city in the Swat Valley.

According to police officials, Malala and two girlfriends were injured when the gunmen opened fire on her vehicle.

Malala has undergone emergency surgery and is said to be a stable condition.  She had been provided with a car and unarmed security personnel after receiving death threats.

The international children's advocacy group Kids Rights Foundation included Malala among the nominees for the International Children's Peace Prize after she wrote a diary in 2009 detailing her life under the Taliban.

She was also awarded the first National Peace Award by the Pakistani government in 2011.
