#Barred: Ridesharing service Uber banned in Delhi after rape allegations

The ridesharing service Uber has had its license to operate cancelled by authorities in the Indian capital New Delhi after a driver was accused by a female passenger of rape.

The ban was imposed by the Delhi Transport Department and comes into effect immediately following the alleged rape on Sunday.

Police have arrested a man – locally named as 32-year-old driver Shiv Kumar Yadav – following the rape complaint.

A statement from the Delhi Transport Department on Monday afternoon said that alleged violations of state motor vehicle rules and the allegation meant it had “banned all activities relating to providing any transport service by the www.uber.com with immediate effect.”

Also on Monday, the Chief Executive of San Francisco-based Uber, Travis Kalanick vowed “justice” for the 26-year-old victim and described the incident as “horrific”.

In a blog post on the company’s website, Mr Kalanick said: “We will do everything, I repeat, everything to help bring this perpetrator to justice and to support the victim and her family in her recovery.”

On Monday it also emerged that Yadav had previously been acquitted for raping a victim inside his taxi in Delhi in 2011.

The victim has alleged that Yadav threatened her with physical violence, sexually assaulted her and then dropped her off at her home with a warning to not tell anyone about the incident.

After being notified about the allegations, Uber is said to have acted immediately, providing investigators with the driver’s name, photograph, address and vehicle details.

Uber relies on local governments to carry out background checks of drivers but Mr Kalanick said he would “work with the government to establish clear background checks”.

In a statement to Parliament about the alleged rape, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the government “strongly condemns this dastardly act.”

India is Uber’s largest market after the United States in terms of the number of cities it operates in.
