The Gulf emirate of Dubai has announced plans to build a $1b replica of the Taj Mahal.
The replica will be named 'Taj Arabia' and, in keeping with the emirate's obsession with scale, will be "three to four times" bigger than the original in Agra, according to developers 'Falconcity of Wonders'.
The Taj Arabia has been dubbed the 'New City of Love' and will be used as a venue for weddings as well as to entice honeymooners and couples to Dubai.
The monumental replica will be part of the new, 3.8 million square meter 'Falconcity of Wonders' development which will also feature replicas of the Eiffel Tower, Leaning Tower of Pisa and other international landmarks and UNESCO Heritage Sites.
Dubai is home to some of the most impressive real estate developments in the world, including the world's tallest hotel, largest shopping mall, underwater hotels as well as some of the world's biggest developments on land reclaimed from the sea.
The Taj Mahal - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - is situated in the city of Agra near Delhi, and was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a shrine to his beloved wife Mumtaz.
It took more than 20 years to complete and has often been described as "a teardrop on the cheek of time".
The Taj Arabia is set to open in 2014.
