#TopDog: The best place to eat in the UK? An Irani-style cafe serving Pav Bhajis in London.

The achingly stylish, Irani-style cafe Dishoom in Central London has come out tops in a list of the best places to eat in the UK.

The restaurant pipped scores of casual dining restaurants as well as eateries owned by the likes of Heston Blumenthal and Gordon Ramsay in Yelp's Top 100 list which is derived from user reviews on the site.

As the list is based on the reviews of ordinary diners - as opposed critics and culinary experts - "cheap and cheerful" restaurants dominate the list which includes plenty of pizza and burger parts as well as cafes.

With an average four stars gleaned from over 370 reviews, Dishoom is reguarly praised by reviewers for its "excellent service" "reasonable prices" and "wonderful food".

One of the founders of Dishoom, Shamil Thakrar, said: "We couldn't be more delighted to hear this news. We feel privileged just to be able to be able to serve the guests who come through our doors for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, and perhaps share a little bit of our love for Bombaby food and culture with them.

"We're truly blown away that so many people have chosen to share their opinions of us online to help us reach the top spot".

The Covent Garden branch of Dishoom is one of three outlets in London - the others are located in Shoreditch and King's Cross.

Since launching in 2010, the restaurants have become hugely popular with a seat nigh on impossible to obtain on a Friday or Saturday evening - on other days, be prepared to brave the cold as you queue outside for a minimum one hour.

Dishoom is inspired by the famous all-day cafes that were set up by Iranian immigrants to Mumbai in the late 19th and early 20th Century.

In keeping with those outlets, there is a vintage sophistication about Dishoom with plenty of brasswork, wood, exposed ventilation ducts and sepia photographs adorning the walls.

The restaurant serves a variety of Indian staples such as exquisite Biriyanis as well as streetfood like Pav Bhajis washed down with - slightly overpriced - Thums Up and Limca.
